Organize, Intend, Resolve, Oh My!

Organize, Intend, Resolve: Which Will You Do as the Year Begins?

Everyone has their own routine for ringing out the old year and ringing in the new. Like many, part of mine involves cleaning out the old year’s files and setting up new ones for my financial records. (yes, I still maintain files for hard copies despite the availability of paperless records. Old habits die hard.) Some years, it doesn’t happen until I’ve done my taxes (typically as close to the due date as possible).

This year, however, I’m endeavoring to start things off on a stronger note, and that means getting organized sooner rather than later. That being said, my 2017 files have been moved to the file cabinet, 2018 folders have been created, and I have a stack of paperwork to be shredded as I’m no longer holding things for 20 years before deciding it’s time to let it go. OK, so what remains to be shredded is from 2007, but 10 years back is better than 20, right?

In keeping with this mad desire to organize, I’ve cleared my desk of most of the extraneous paraphernalia and created a “To Do” folder to help solve the accumulation of papers on the corner of my desk problem. (Though as far as the cats are concerned, I simply cleared space for them to sprawl while I’m working to keep their bellies full and their bodies warm and cozy!) Here’s hoping I remember to use the folder, and, more importantly, look at it once in awhile!

Resolutions Are Made to be Broken

By now, many of you have compiled a list of New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions, especially made on a specific date and solely for the sake of making resolutions has never been my thing. I see it in the same way I see losing weight. If you lose something, it means you intend to find it, and if you resolve something, it means you’ll break those resolutions.

Enjoying the Flexibility of Intentions

Instead, I continue my practice of setting intentions whenever and wherever the mood strikes. It happens the mood struck on the last day of the year, merely by coincidence. I was mentally reviewing the year’s accomplishments as I wrote my morning pages on December 31st, and found I wanted to up the ante, so to speak, on what I could do with what I’d already done. Here are a few of the intentions I made:

  • Publish “Forgotten Victims”.
  • Write something besides my morning pages each and every day. (so far, I have not managed to get this one going, but setting intentions doesn’t imply we’ll achieve all of them at the same time).
  • Have more healthy eating days.
  • Get back to my 3 days a week gym routine (again, still working on getting this one going).
  • Forgive more and take less things personally. Everyone has their stuff and oftentimes, they are reacting to their stuff and not to anything I’ve said or done.
  • Have more “no sugar” days. (so far, so good. 4 days and counting).
  • Keep up with the habit of making my bed every day I set a couple of years ago. (we all need a gimme in our intentions. This is mine.)
  • Use the notes I’ve accumulated for books and stories in progress to actually create something new or improve on my works-in-progress.
  • Take the steps I need to move closer to the life I have been envisioning. (took a step closer when I signed up to beta test Josh Koerpel’s Fire Builders accountability program)
  • Deep clean my house more often than at the holidays.
  • Pull up the rest of the old, disgusting carpet in my bedroom.
  • Continue de-cluttering my space.
  • Devote more hours per day working on my career and less on wasting time/procrastinating.
  • Acquire and read more books on self-improvement and business success.
  • Resume the WTGOWL program and release the rest of the weight I need to divest myself of in order to reach my health and fitness goals.
  • Work on getting to bed earlier and rising by 8 AM more frequently.

In the last 5 years as I’ve gotten more consistent about setting intentions, I’ve learned that writing them down and putting them where I can see them every day is one of the best motivators, not only for manifesting my intentions, but improving upon them as I get closer, or even occasionally hitting one out of the park.

Planting Our Own “Carrots”

I’ve always been a proponent of baby steps; small steps taken on a regular basis to reach our goals, but in the process of following my own advice, I’ve learned we all need something to reach for; something which is not quite attainable at this moment in time. As I get closer to a goal, or achieve an intention, I am compelled to raise the bar and create something new to reach for.

Sometimes it seems like a mere blink of the eye to get past a block which kept me from fulfilling an intention, while others can and do take years. It took me 9 of them to finish the first draft of “Forgotten Victims”, and 4 to finally act on the one I set to attend a writer’s conference. Yet I know the timing for both was exactly right. There are goals we set which have steps we may not even see, but despite our lack of vision, we must take those steps before realizing the prize at the end. It may be frustrating at times, and we may fall into the trap of beating ourselves up about it. As self-flagellation is one of my many sins, I created a sort of mantra around it: Everything happens in its right and proper time.

Feeling the Energy of a “Life” Year

I can’t speak for everyone, but I feel an energy this year which wasn’t present in the past. A kind of cattle prod to the back, spurring me to move forward faster. It should come as no surprise, really, as the Hebrew symbol for “Chai” or “Life” is also the symbol for the number 18. Last year was, for me, more of a “ducks in a row” kind of year; a time for finishing old projects, self-care, and relationship-building.

Looking back on the year, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing I could have done more had I been less scattered and lazy. Yet, my mantra says it all. Just as “Forgotten Victims” took 9 years to write, those lazy, scattered, motivationless times are necessary too.

Last year, I found a book on my shelf I didn’t remember buying: Sue Monk Kidd’s “When the Heart Waits”. It sums up not only 2017 for me, but the years since I quit my day job. We have to allow those periods of waiting; of hibernation so to speak. That’s when our bodies, minds and spirits are going through huge transformations. Those transformations can’t be rushed or short-cutted. If we try to do either, we’ll only set the process back, causing it to take longer than it should. But even then, when we do feel like we’ve sabotaged the process, we’ve only done what needed to be done. There’s always a reason and a time, though we don’t always recognize it during the process, or even long after we’ve completed it and moved on to other things. Learning to trust in the process is, by far the greatest lesson I’ve learned while following my own path these last 4 years.

Making the Most of Our Time on the Planet

Whether you choose to resolve or intend, or maybe you simply go with the flow, I encourage you to be gentle with yourself and not judge. Trust that you’ll know when to move and when to sit still and listen if you let your heart and gut be your guide rather than you overactive, and overcritical mind. May 2018 be our best year yet.

Gratitude: The Ultimate Motivator

My gratitudes today are:

  1. I am grateful for the connections I’ve made or renewed over the last few years.
  2. I am grateful I’m able to learn new things all the time, and embrace life’s changes with less and less fear every day.
  3. I am grateful I finally completed “Forgotten Victims” and am looking forward to earning a publishing contract this year.
  4. I am grateful for the courage to step outside my comfort zone with larger and larger steps.
  5. I am grateful for the years of hibernation in which I learned to trust my heart, shut down my inner critic (at least for a minute or two), and attract the support I need to turn my baby steps into giant leaps.
  6. I am grateful for abundance: love, encouragement, courage, friendships old and new, forgiveness, kindness, compassion, peace, harmony, health, philanthropy, and prosperity.

Take Time to Breathe Through Your Challenges

Just Breathe’s face it. For life to be any kind of interesting, there are going to be periods when you feel like you’re riding the roller coaster from hell. While the wild ride might be fun and exciting for a while, there comes a point when you’re grateful to have reached the end. There comes a time when being in a semi-comatose state is not only a relief but necessary. We all need time to let our minds, bodies, and spirits recover from an overdose of the insanity life loves to throw into our paths. We need to allow ourselves time to just breathe.

This week has really run the gamut for me, and there are still a few more days left! From plumbing issues which just don’t want to be easily resolved to meeting with new clients, to throwing myself into new experiences, the week has definitely been an E ticket ride. The ups and downs I’m experiencing remind me, like a bucket of ice water to the face that life is truly about balance.

We are mired in frustration and soothed by ease. We hit all the red lights, then a path opens up just for us. We feel like money flows only one direction—away. Then suddenly, those interviews we had or proposals we submitted begin bearing fruit—often with the intensity of a California mud slide. When they do, we realize just how important those times we spent semi-comatose really were. We’re ready for the challenges and embrace them wholeheartedly.

Make the Most of the Down Time

Yet the biggest challenge for me is to use the down time wisely. Though I need to catch up on reading or finish a course I started, it’s easy to slip into sloth-like habits; spending too much time on social media, watching TV, playing computer games, or just napping endlessly. I recently discovered something most of you probably already know. Sloth attracts more sloth.

While I was farting around accomplishing nothing, opportunities eluded me. But when I changed my course, began participating actively in entrepreneurial groups, or supporting other entrepreneurs, focused my reading (and my meditations) on self-improvement, and limited the time sucking activities, abundance began to flow like the leaking hot water line under my house.

Messages in Bottles or Leaky Pipes

I also realized something rather profound. The leaking pipe and the destruction required to fix the problem were a direct reflection of the path my life was taking. The foundation I’d laid was weakening and even breaking. It needed to be torn up in places and rebuilt differently. My efforts were flowing uselessly (and expensively) into the ground, wasted and misguided. I needed to do some serious soul-searching to redirect my efforts and locate the places in my foundation which no longer served my best interests. Even the ground on which I stood was no longer the safe, stable place I’d come to take for granted.

Yet, I’m reminded by people like Linda Clay that, like the song says “there’s a time for every purpose”. The times I spend mimicking a sloth aren’t as unproductive as I think. Yet, knowing when to move away from those times is also key. Just like a dead-end job can become a rut, so can dead-end slothing. Recognizing things like plumbing leaks and excess water usage are essential in determining when we need to do what is taught in the Neurogym courses, and GOYA (get off your ass)! Ignoring the signs and symptoms will result in hemorrhaging our resources, be it money, energy, water, or even life-giving blood.

Turning Messages into Productive Actions

By now you might be asking how to recognize the signs. How can simple things like a plumbing leak or constant delays mean more than they seem at face value? For me, it comes down to a process I’ve developed in the usual manner, through trial and error. I’ve learned to apply it to any and all seeming problems which arise in my life, my home, and my overall environment. I apply those steps as follows:

  1. Step back from the problem.
  2. Depersonalize it while remaining open to possible solutions.
  3. Ask myself how it might apply to the situations currently active in my life, be they personal, business, or something else.
  4. Meditate on question 3, allowing answers to flow rather than be forced into existence.
  5. Take the necessary steps to resolve the obvious problem (especially with interpersonal issues, this isn’t always clear).
  6. Take action on signals I receive about seemingly unrelated parts of my life.
  7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 as often as necessary until I feel that my life is flowing freely and smoothly again.

I won’t say this is a fool-proof system as the control freak in me invariably decides things are moving too slowly and seeks to intervene, more often than not exacerbating the problem rather than helping. What I will say is that the more I practice the process, the more I fine-tune it. The more I fine-tune it, the easier it becomes to let go and avoid trying to control the solution.

Going with the Flow

Even now, as I sit here waiting for the leak detection company to re-do their work because the spot where they said the leak was located turned out to be a perfectly solid piece of pipe, I’m opening myself to other areas in my life where this situation is reflected. Where else did I think I’d found the problem only to discover I hadn’t. Where else am I experiencing delays? Where else am I allowing myself to be frustrated because I’m not controlling the situation?

It all comes down to one thing, really. I need to get out of my own way. Give myself permission to stop and smell the coffee. Maybe even find a way to get those two red chairs I saw at Lowe’s home so I have a cozy spot on what I jokingly call my veranda. Invite a friend over to share a bottle of wine and watch the world go by from my front porch looking out.

We spend a lot of time rushing from here to there, blowing through a to-do list that would freeze the heart of the most Type A CEO. Yet in most cases, we’re not really changing the world. We’re simply anesthetizing ourselves to the effects of everyone else rushing around like they have to accomplish so much every week. In reality, less is truly more. We really need less moments which leave us breathless and more that take our breath away.

Let Your Gratitude Go Wild

My gratitudes today are:

  1. I am grateful for setbacks and challenges that force me to slow down, look around, and reassess.
  2. I am grateful for opportunities to look at my life from different angles.
  3. I am grateful for my sloth-y times. I’m never really doing nothing, or acting without purpose. It only seems like it.
  4. I am grateful for new opportunities which arise when I finally figure out how to get out of my own way.
  5. I am grateful for abundance; love, friendship, inspiration, motivation, aha moments, joys both great and small, peace, harmony, philanthropy, and prosperity.

Are Self-Limiting Beliefs Undermining Your Sense of Worthiness?

Recognizing Self-Limiting Beliefs

(This post is a follow-up to my May 14th Facebook Live which can be found by clicking the link)

Last year, I bought Neurogym’s Winning the Game of Money program and listened to the 12 weeks worth of audios dutifully not once but three times. Still, I hadn’t really made the progress with my business I’d have liked, nor had I broken through some of the barriers to my success. I finally set the program and all of its bonus materials aside for awhile, and focused on my physical health with much more success.

I’ve learned over the years that if something isn’t working or I’m just not getting it to set it aside and let the ideas percolate for a while. In fact, I’ve found that works for books I can’t, at first get into as well. (Most notable lately was Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now.) When the time is right, I’ll have an epiphany and be able to resume forward progress (or in the case of books, I might get bonked on the head when what I need to read falls off the shelf in protest for being ignored).

This week, I had one of those epiphanies. My business block had to do with a self-limiting belief about money, or more specifically, people with money. Somehow, I’d gotten it into my head that I wasn’t worthy of associating with people who were, by my perception, rich, or at least very well off. I know it’s silly as people are people regardless of their net worth, but the feeling was there and I needed to find its source and clear it.

Uncovering the Source of the Self-Limiting Belief

I didn’t have far to look. My mom was very conscious of money and people who had it. Most of my life she was trying to align herself with wealthy people, but anyone who knew her as well as anyone was allowed could see she wasn’t entirely comfortable around even those she called friends. Admittedly, my mom had more unworthiness issues than anyone else I know, but love and money were her biggest albatrosses.

We inherit many of our traits and beliefs from our parents whether we like it or not. Many just bubble beneath the surface, harming no one. But others, like feelings of unworthiness are diabolical creatures. They undermine our best efforts to follow our dreams; telling us in the most sincere, loving voices that we’d best turn our attention elsewhere. Like a rattlesnake hiding in the grass waiting to bite the unwary, our internal nay-sayer lies in wait for opportunities to chop us down to a size it deems appropriate. Why? Because change is our internal voice’s mortal enemy.

Many times, we don’t even hear the whispered voice telling us we can’t. We simply fail one time too often and give up, often just before the attempt which would have yielded the results we sought. We can silence the voice, but first, we have to recognize its existence and more, its methods.

In my case, that voice was particularly annoyed because I’d recently replaced It’s too hard! with I can! with regard to physical activities. I’ve been pushing my limits at the gym, and more recently, on hiking trails, with spectacular results. That voice was especially determined to knock me down to size, and where better than my dreams of being a successful writer and entrepreneur?

Lessons Are Like Dancing. What Works in One Area of Life Will Likely Work in Another.

But I’d learned a valuable lesson with my physical improvements. If I tell myself I can and keep trying no matter how many times I fail or have to take a step back, I’ll eventually conquer the next milestone and be able to move forward.

I also started looking around at my circle of friends. Most of them, admittedly, are from the dance community, but that makes more sense as I join some of them for hikes or other activities which involve self-improvement. People who engage in an activity like dancing on a regular basis are the last ones you’ll find sitting on a couch at night munching on junk food and drinking beer. In short, the antithesis of the people my ex attracted. I’ve come a long way from that place, though until now, I hadn’t realized just how far.

Surrounding Myself With People Who Embrace Change

People who have already eschewed the pull of the one-eyed monster and couch surfing are the ones who are more likely to challenge themselves in all areas of their lives. They’re the people who retire only to start new businesses or take on large projects. They’re the ones you can count on for help if you’ve bitten off more than you can chew, or just need an example to follow to get you past a temporary road block. Often, they’re the same ones who are financially well off, but are also low-key about it.

So when I noticed how many of my friends are traveling at least once a year to Europe or South America or other exotic locales, it hit me. I already do fit in with those who are better off financially than me. And nobody cares! They simply accept that I’m at a different place in my life. I’ve made choices which temporarily put me at a lower point economically, but as that isn’t the basis of our friendship in the first place, it just isn’t an issue.

If it’s not an issue for my friends, why on earth should I make it one in my own head?

Recognizing and Eradicating Self-limiting Beliefs: I Am Enough

When it comes to self-limiting beliefs, the first step is to recognize them. The second is realizing the only one they matter to is ourselves. At that point, we can use whatever method works for us to release the belief. In some cases, it might be writing it on a piece of paper and burning it. In others, perhaps meditating on releasing the baseless and inhibiting belief. Still others might just bulldog their way through, faking it ’til they make it, as it were.

I tend to use a combination of techniques, but have added a new one this time and hired a business coach. We’re only really focusing on one area where I’m stuck and I’ve only purchased three sessions, but it will get me headed in the right direction. And I will also be ready to listen to the Winning the Game of Money audios as well as working through the tasks with more clarity and direction. Two of my biggest road blocks are now out in the open where they can be addressed and released.

I’ve learned already that I truly do have tenacity in far greater quantities than I gave myself credit for. Now I’m learning how I’ve been getting in my own way regarding money and social status.

There will be more discoveries and releasing to do along the way, but these unexpected successes will make it easier to negotiate the mine field of my own mind in the future. I’ll be more inclined to get out of my own way and ignore the voice telling me I’m not good enough or intelligent enough or determined enough…any enoughs at all. Because at the end of the day, what truly matters is that I am enough!

Get in Tune With Your Own Self-Limiting Beliefs

What is holding you back from achieving your dreams? What self-limiting falsehoods is your inner voice feeding you so it can avoid having to change? How are you going to clear those thoughts and replace them with the ones which will propel you in the direction you want to go? There’s never a better time than now to start shutting those who would get in your way down. And the worst of those will always be the ones inside your own mind.

Self-Sabotaging Money Story

When My Thoughts Bring My Brain to a Screeching Halt

This morning I was up early to take two of my boys in for their long-delayed checkups. I knew at least one of them would need dental work soon and wasn’t surprised when Dylan needed his work sooner rather than later.

As I handed over my credit card to pay the $521 bill for blood work and office visits for the two boys, I found myself thinking It’s only money. WHAT???

I realized I’ve been telling myself that almost every time a large expense came up. I was horrified by the thought that I’d resigned myself to my lack mentality! What a crock! After all the time I spend being grateful for having everything I need, to discover I’ve been undermining myself all along was quite a wake-up call.

How Our Conditioned Responses Kick Our Butts

The Laws of Attraction say the Universe will always respond to our requests and give us what we ask for. My dismissing money in this callous fashion is counteracting all of the times I express gratitude for being able to give my kitties and me the life I envision, and all of the charities I’ve been envisioning funding. Just 3 little words are turning all of my best intentions upside down.

It started me thinking, how many times I allow conditioned responses to crumble the inroads of progress I’ve made towards my goals; to dissolve my visualizations of my perfect life like a puff of smoke?

In Neurogym’s “Winning the game of {money/weight loss/fear/etc.}” series, one of the things they mention repeatedly in every single course is mindfulness. Whether it’s eating mindfully to lose weight or being mindful of the steps you’re taking and the signals you’re receiving to achieve your goals, it’s important to be aware of how you’re truly thinking about those goals. If you’re wishy washy about them, the likelihood of seeing them materialize is pretty much nil.

My errant but all-too-frequent thought I had today is clearly a huge part of what’s been holding me back and allowing me to make excuses for not accomplishing squat. So here’s what I’m doing to change my money story for the better.

Seeking Clarity by Asking Questions

I’m asking myself to answer the question: What is money?

Money is:

  • A tool
  • A means of exchanging one product or service for another
  • A way to value something I have to offer
  • A universally recognized thing which allows us to help others by giving them something they can then exchange for something they need
  • An arbitrary unit of measure
  • In and of itself, neither good nor evil
  • Used by some to differentiate between the haves and have nots
  • A way to convert my visualizations and effort into the tangible realization of my dreams

I’m sure you can add a dozen or so more definitions to my list because we all see it as something a little different, just as we value its possession in different manners. But there is really no question that it can be useful to have more of it than less, right?

Stop the Self-Sabotaging Behavior With a Well-placed Pivot

I read a blog post today which reminded me of the concept of “pivoting” which I first read about in “Laws of Attraction”. It is the perfect example of what I realized was needed when I noticed the direction my thoughts were taking. I realized that when I find myself thinking It’s only money, what I need to switch my thoughts to is something like: I’m so grateful I have enough money to give my animals the very best possible care. or I’m so grateful I have enough money to support Cat House on the Kings and Fixnation in their efforts to improve the lives of our feline population.

Then, I firmly affix that beautiful visual of my private peninsula overlooking the ocean where I rescue cats, grow fruits and vegetables to share, and have a couple of secluded cabins for my artist friends to use when they need to get away and work on their craft.

Sure, it might “only” be money, but it is the means to achieve my dreams. It is the validation for giving up the corporate world and pounding away at my keyboard for hours at a time. It is the reward for stepping so far outside my comfort zone that trying to look back makes me dizzy. And it is what gives me the freedom to work my own hours and make my own rules; to work from home or a cabana on some tropical island or a hotel room high above Sedona.

Giving Myself the Necessary Re-set

In short, to me, money is freedom. And there’s no “only” in freedom.
